Scholarships For Post-Graduate Study in UK

The British Chevening Scholarships are funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Foreign Ministry) of the British Government. The awards are designed to enable overseas student to study in the United Kingdom. The Scholarships are offered in 170 countries and are aimed at potential future leaders, decision makers and opinion formers. World-Wide, the Scheme provides around 2,200 scholarships a year, worth an estimated £35 million, for post-graduate study in the UK.

Since 1984, when the Scheme started, more than 184 Bahrainis have benefited from going to study in UK, in fields such as remote sensing, water resources, teaching English as a foreign language, company law and environmental management, to mention a few. Initially the Scholarships were awarded to the Public Sector only, but in 1989 the British Ambassador invited local companies to become co-sponsors of the scheme, thus making more funds available. Since then, Scholarships are usually for the full academic year but shorter courses of a minimum of three months will also be considered. The Scheme normally covers tuition fees only.

Awards for part-time study are not available under this Scheme.

The Scholarships are aimed at Bahraini national who:

  • Already hold a university degree
  • Have a number of years' work experience
  • Are preferably between 25 and 35 years of age
  • Can prove a high standard of both spoken and written English
  • Are ambitious and have promotion prospects
  • Will be financially supported by their Ministries/ Companies.

The Scheme is administered on behalf of the British Embassy by the British Council.

Without co-sponsorship, the number of these Scholarships would be halved, so we are extremely grateful to the following sponsors :-

  • HSBC
  • Standard Chartered Bank
  • Batelco
  • Bapco
  • Cable and Wireless.
