What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is internationally recognised as a language requirement for further and higher education, particularly for universities in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. IELTS assesses whether you are ready to take a degree course or professional training in English. It tests your ability to read, write, speak and listen in an academic context. IELTS is developed and managed by the British Council, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and IDP Education, Australia. Whether you are a professional or a student, taking the IELTS exam could be the first step on a new and exciting career ladder.

How can I prepare for the test?

You can follow a 45-hour course at the British Council Teaching Centre which will prepare you for the test. You can also buy an IELTS Specimen Material Pack, which includes a full practice test with a cassette and an answer key.

What does the test consist of?

All candidates must take the same listening and speaking tests. If you are planning to go on to academic study, then you should sit for the Academic Reading and Writing Modules. If you are preparing for non-academic training, you should take the General Training Reading and Writing Modules.

  • Listening: 4 Sections, 40 items, 30 minutes;
  • Academic Reading: 3 Sections, 40 items, 60 minutes;
  • General Training Reading: 3 Sections, 40 items, 60 minutes;
  • Academic Writing: 2 tasks(150 & 250 words) 60 minutes;
  • General Training Writing: 2 tasks (150 & 250 words) 60 minutes;
  • Speaking: 10 to 15 minutes.

When can I take the test?

There are normally two tests per month held at the British Council in 5 Fuller Road. It is better to book well in advance to be sure you can take the test at the time you require.You can also sit twice a month at the British Council Chittagong in 77/A East Nasirabad, Chittagong.   • Test fee: Tk.5,750
  • Three recent passport size photographs (coloured)
  • Copies of first 4 pages of Passport
  • Registration is on a first come first served basis
  • Copy of previous IELTS result ( for repeaters only)
  • Dhaka course fee Tk 12,650
  • Sylhet couse fee Tk 12,650
  • Chittagong course fee Tk 12,650

  • Note that during the test you will be required to show your passport.

3. Get the results:

  • Your Test Report Form (TRF) shows your overall ability as well as your individual scores for listening, reading, writing and speaking. Scores are given on a 9 band scale, with 9 being equivalent to an expert user of English. Different institutions have their own entrance requirements. In general, universities request an overall band score of between 5.5 and 6.5. Requirements vary between departments.
