Bulgaria has been invited to negotiate its accession to the European Union. Bulgaria's accession is a priority for the governments of both Bulgaria and the United Kingdom and the British Council in Bulgaria is committed to supporting Bulgaria in its efforts to achieve this. We now, therefore, concentrate much of our effort in collaborative initiatives which will actively contribute to Bulgaria's accession process.

We do this by working with local and UK partners on the implementation of programmes which are designed either to help Bulgaria develop sustainable professional structures with strong European links or to contribute to the development of the civil society. These two strands of activity, however, are not mutually exclusive and there is often a comfortable overlap between the two. Together they form an important criterion for us in helping us to define the projects we want to be involved in, whether these are funded by ourselves or through other donors.

Recent examples of major projects we have managed on behalf of other donors include:

We are currently managing the implementation of the EU Phare-funded Integrated Development Project in the Pernik Region under the special preparatory programme for structural funds.
