Association of Business Schools

The Association of Business Schools is the national representative body of UK business schools. It was formed in 1995 and represents 100 major business and management schools across higher education in the UK. 'Association of Business Schools (ABS)' publishes a Directory of Business Schools in the UK which has information about the schools and their courses, including MBAs.

Association of MBAs

AMBA is a membership organisation of people who hold the degree of MBA. It was formed in 1967 and has approx 7,500 members. AMBA accredits a number of MBA programmes according to its own criteria. It publishes the AMBA Guide to Business Schools which covers MBAs in the UK, Europe and America. AMBA administers the Business School Loan Scheme but does not offer scholarships.

Professional Institutes

Institute of Management

The 'Institute of Management (IM)' is the professional membership organisation for managers. It has 70,000 members. The aim of the IM is to promote the development, exercise and recognition of professional management. It awards national management qualifications, researches best management practice and provides a range of services to members.

Institute of Personnel and Development

The 'Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD)' is the professional institute for those concerned with the management and development of people. It has more than 75,000 members across the UK and Ireland. The IPD was formed in 1994 when the Institute of Personnel Management and the Institute of Training and Development joined forces.

Management Charter Initiative

The 'Management Charter Initiative (MCI)' is an independent body set up by employers and backed by the Government with the aim of improving the performance of the UK's managers. MCI has two roles: to improve the provision of management development in the UK and to develop national Management Standards which are benchmarks of best practice used by managers to help them perform better. The Management Standards form the basis of National Vocational Qualifications in management.

The 'Management Consultancies Association (MCA)' is the trade association for the leading management consulting firms in the UK.
