Workshop on Language and Development

Introduction

What is the role of language in achieving development objectives?

Some fifty participants gathered at a workshop in February 1998 which we organised in co-operation with the Department for International Development (DFID). The workshop formed part of the consultations leading up to DFID's Education Policy Paper .
Those who attended included specialists from UK universities, agencies, NGOs as well as freelance consultants and representatives from DFID, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Council.

The outcomes of the workshop are available here. These are listed below, with a hypertext link to each document as it becomes available on line. We also have a related discussion list, DEVLANG-L, for workshop participants and others who want to contribute to discussion of these issues.
