British Council Education and Training

Our aim is to promote the UK’s education and training services. In February 2002, we organised for the second time an education fair at the 6th Addis Chamber International Trade Fair in Addis Ababa. This was done in close collaboration with the British Embassy and Focus Groupx International, which represented 10 UK publishers. Our aim for participating in this important event was to showcase UK education and training in the areas of schools education, technical and vocational education, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and distance learning.

A further aim was to promote UK educational products, including books and industrial innovations. We also wanted to create awareness of the British Council's current operations in Ethiopia, and to facilitate the development of new collaborative links between UK and Ethiopian education institutions. Our exhibition attracted over 20,000 visitors from higher education institutions, private and government institutions, schools, NGOs, major private enterprises, parents and young professionals. A representative from Hartpury College came to promote the college’s courses and programmes. Our participation led to an increased number of enquiries about UK education, particularly distance learning opportunities.

We will identify products with potential for the Ethiopian market and seek effective ways to pro-actively promote them, making greater use of the Education UK brand. We will continue to raise our profile and that of UK education through our presence at fairs and events. Distance learning products are likely to be key products. The British Council has helped to establish the UK’s reputation in this field through its work on Open University programmes Our increased move towards open learning in the information centre should also enhance this approach.
