About the Research Councils

Together, the seven research councils and the Arts and Humanities Research Board support UK research in the higher education sector directly through the provision of grants for programmes, projects, centres, fellowships and postgraduate studentships.

The Research Councils receive their funding from the Office of Science and Technology, with additional funds from government departments and agencies, industry and international organisations.

Some Research Councils offer indirect support through the provision of large-scale research facilities, for example, the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) does not provide direct research funding but it does provide leading edge facilities and scientific and technical expertise. A number of the research councils also support research in their own institutes, units or centres.

Research Councils UK (RCUK)
Research Councils UK is a strategic partnership set up to champion science, engineering and technology supported by the seven UK Research Councils. Through RCUK, the Research Councils are working together to create a common framework for research, training and knowledge transfer. The new partnership is lead by the RCUK strategy group, which is chaired by the Director General of Research Councils (DGRC) and includes the Chief Executives of the seven Research Councils as Members. The Chief Executive of the Arts and Humanities Research Board sits, as an observer, on the Research Councils UK Strategy Group.
