By promoting UK culture and creativity, British Council has a unique role to play in sustaining communications for, and about, UK science, engineering and technology, and how these interact to create wealth and social well-being in the UK system of innovation as a whole. Our science policy framework encompasses two, interdependent programme areas. 'Excellence in International Science' sustains communications for innovation, stressing partnerships and wealth creation. 'Understanding Science in Society' sustains communications about innovation, stressing cultural relevance and social well-being.

Through our professional science network we assist science activity in 60 countries, supported by a science budget of 8 million. Read more about our our science policy.

If you want to know about public sector science in the UK, then ’GOST‘, our guide to the organisation of science and technology in the UK, is the answer. A new edition is underway and will be available in June.

We have other publications that provide up-to-date information on science policy issues in the UK and in Europe. Check out our monthly bulletins Science Insight and European RTD Insight for the latest news.
