International Student Services Unit

Your guide to international welfare services

The advisory service is provided by a team of international welfare advisers based in the British Council's headquarters in Manchester. All of the welfare advisers are professionally qualified social workers with considerable experience in the provision of casework management and practice, nursing care and the development and delivery of training. They are currently the only such qualified team working in the UK with international students.

'a genuine concern for the overall well being of an individual or group of people.'

For the British Council the concept of welfare is one of caring in a context, that is, the professional administration of sponsored scholarships for a wide range of clients. As officers of the British Council, the welfare advisers have a duty both towards the students and the clients and aim to ensure that students successfully complete their training.

The unit also contributes to national debate on international student welfare issues through its liaison officers who work closely with other national and voluntary bodies in the same field. Promotion of best practise in the care and support if international students is of key importance to the work of the unit as a whole.

Operating around the clock, around the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A 24 hour, 7 day a week contactable emergency service for immediate advice on the management of urgent welfare cases.

This service is available to trainees who come to Britain under the auspices of the British Council. If you need to use the service please contact the British Council Regional Service Officer nearest to your place of study. If you are overseas then contact our office in your own country. You will then be referred to a welfare adviser based in Manchester.
